DOJ Refutes Report That it Will Drop UBS Suits

Alright, lets try this one again. This morning we blogged an NYT story that reported that the Department of Justice was close to dropping its suit against UBS AG, requesting that the bank turn over the names of some 52,000 individuals who are suspected of tax fraud. Not so fast, as it turns out. Earlier today, the DOJ reported that it will continue its efforts to get the names.

A Malibu man has pleaded guilty to failing to report more than $1 million he transferred to a Swiss bank account.John McCarthy formally pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one count of failing to file a Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts report. Federal Judge Approves $298 Million Settlement Between Barclays, DOJ
A federal judge in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday approved a $298 million settlement between Barclays Bank and the Justice Department to resolve allegations the bank violated government sanctions in processing financial transactions with countries that include Cuba, Iran and Sudan. But he had plenty of questions for Justice Department lawyers, pressing them about why no individuals were being held criminally liable for the actions of the London-based bank. The judge called the charges against the bank "shocking."
