Suit Challenging Bills From Constantine Cannon Goes Forward
The claim of a former client of Constantine Cannon that the law
firm excessively billed for legal fees is moving forward. The
decision by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Carol Edmead came in
what began as a lawsuit by the firm to recover $359,000 in unpaid
legal bills from the family of Howard L. Parnes, a real estate
executive. The Parnes family struck back, claiming the firm did not
execute an engagement letter and overbilled the family, and seeking
disgorgement of $628,000 in already paid fees.

Allow us, LBers, if you will, to circle back to a case to which we
gave rather short shrift last week: the one involving the 32
year-old Minnesota woman, Jammie Thomas-Rasset, who was ordered by
a jury last Thursday to cough up $1.92 million as a penalty for
downloading 24 songs. We went back and checked in with Fred von
Lohmann, a senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier
Foundation out in San Francisco, to bring us up to speed.
Wisconsin attorney general weighs in on e-mail decision
