The Naked Cowboy wants to be the city's mayor, promising
transparency in politics--while running almost buck naked. "I know
how to do more with less," said entertainer Robert Burck, clad as
usual in a pair of white briefs, boots and a cowboy hat, as he
announced his bid Wednesday in Times Square.

Mayor Bloomberg Stands Up for Religious Freedom
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg should get a standing ovation
for his teary-eyed speech yesterday in defense of pluralism and
religious freedom with regard to the proposal to build an Islamic
cultural center two blocks from Ground Zero. "We may not always
agree with every one of our neighbors. That's life and it's part of
living in such a diverse and dense city. But we also recognize that
part of being a New Yorker is living with your neighbors in mutual
respect and tolerance. It was exactly that spirit of openness and
acceptance that was attacked on 9/11," he said. The mayor was
correct to assert that this controversy represents a crucial test
for our precious religious liberty. While we don't always agree
with the mayor, his principled stance on this issue is h...
Tulsa City Council decides against closed-door mediation, votes for public meetings to hash out differences with mayor
The public's need to know prevailed in Tulsa on Thursday.City
councilors -- in a series of 7-2 votes -- decided against mediating
their legal disputes with the mayor in a closed-door executive
session, the Tulsa World reported.Instead, the council invited
Mayor Dewey Bartlett Jr. to participate in a series of public
meetings to resolve their differences.Bartlett indicated he would
participate but warned that in public discussions "people have a
tendency to posture." On Wednesday, this blog argued against using
that as an excuse for conducting the public's business behind
closed doors. Certainly these elected officials can speak openly,
honestly and candidly like adults in front of voters.Councilor
Roscoe Turner, who had signed FOI Oklahoma's Open Government Pledge
during his 2009 campaign,...
Colorado's Primary: The Circus is Underway
The AP takes an unflattering look at Colorado's primaries in
"Colorado's Three Ring Political Circus." While I've focused on
Bennet vs. Romanoff, and the Republican meltdown in the Governor's
race, the description of the two Republican Senate candidates (both
conservative, one an elected District Attorney and former AUSA and
the other a former Lt. Gov. and the Executive Director of the
Denver Police Foundation, married to a former U.S. Attorney
appointed by Reagan and Bush I), is telling: [Ken] Buck, a former
federal prosecutor and the elected district attorney from a
northern county, raised eyebrows by mocking [Jane] Norton's "high
heels" while noting that his cowboy boots are stained with cow
dung. He crusades against illegal immigration, and once obtained

"Sexytime Pat-Downs," or an Invasion of Privacy?
If you've traveled through Boston's Logan airport lately, you'll
surely have noticed a few changes at the security aisles. Most
notably, ominous "naked body scanner" machines now dot each
entrance to the gates, and, as was noted in a minor media fury this
weekend, more invasive pat-downs are now the norm, rather than the
unlucky exception. Even Comedy Central has picked up on the story,
satirically condemning the ACLU for opposing "sexytime patdowns at
the airport." As a frequent flier who has the misfortune of calling
Logan my "home" airport, I've already had a few encounters with
naked scanners and heavy pat-downs. Just a few weeks ago, when
traveling to California for the Fourth of July, I first encountered
the naked scanner. I was asked to step in, do the ...
Former DC Mayor Charged With Stalking
Police say Marion Barry, the ex-Washington, D.C., mayor who served
time after smoking crack in a 1990 FBI sting, was charged with
misdemeanor stalking. The D.C. Council member got arrested in the
nation's capital Saturday after a woman flagged down an officer and
said Barry was stalking her. He has been released.
