US court blocks huge gold mine project in Nevada
blocked construction of a massive gold mine project in northeast
Nevada that critics say would harm the environment and ruin a
mountain several tribes consider sacred.A three-judge panel of the
9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed part of an earlier
decision denying a preliminary injunction sought by
conservationists and tribal leaders. The groups had sought the
injunction to force Barrick Gold Corp. to postpone digging a
2,000-foot-deep open pit at the Cortez Hills mine 250 miles east of
Reno. The 17-page ruling issued Thursday in San Francisco said the
U.S. Bureau of Land Management failed to adequately analyze the
potential for the mine on Mount Tenabo (tuh-NAH'-boh) to pollute
the air with mercury emissions and dry up scarce water resources.
Cross-Chargeability
The quota system is based on a person’s place of birth, not
their nationality. For example, if someone is born in France
and subsequently becomes a Canadian citizen, they are usually
treated by our immigration law as French. I wrote
“usually” because there are many people who can use
their spouse’s place of birth instead of their own to receive
an important advantage. For example, if an Indian-born engineer with
a Master’s Degree is sponsored by his company, it might take
more than 4 years of waiting because the Indian quota is
oversubscribed. If he were married to someone born in
Pakistan or England, there might not be any waiting period (besides
administrative processing) because those quotas may be
current.Another instance where cross-charg...
Family Member Given Preference in Iowa Guardianship Case
Local probate Judge Ruth Klotz issued her ruling Thursday in the
public and controversial case involving Robert Queener. Mr.
Queener becamed the center-piece of a dispute between Iowa
Department of Human Services (DHS) and Mr. Queener's niece.
The dispute focused on who should be appointed his guardian
and conservator. DHS had taken an active, and arguably
aggressive, role in his custody and control of his assets with the
appointment of their recommended parties for guardian and
conservator. Mr. Queener's niece, Cheri Jensen, also sought
to be appointed as his guardian and conservator. In Thursday's
ruling, the court after hearings for the past several months,
indicated a preference for appointment of family members as a
guardian, provided they are not disqualified ...

E. Illinois-Iowa Preview Iowa likely won't have the most potent
