A federal judge has refused to let a shipping company plead guilty
to two misdemeanor environmental crimes for an oil spill from one
of its ships in San Francisco Bay.br pThe judge ruled Monday that
if Hong Kong-based Fleet Management Ltd. wants to plead guilty, it
has to admit to charges in a revised indictment.ppThe new
indictment significantly increases the damage estimate for the
spill. It says the company is responsible for at least 20 million
in damage, which exposes it to a fine of as much as 40
million.ppThe cargo ship, Cosco Busan, spilled 53,000 gallons of
oil after sideswiping the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in
2007.ppFleet Management also has pleaded not guilty to six felony
counts and faces several lawsuits.p

A former money manager convicted of trying to fake his own death in
a Florida plane crash has agreed to plead guilty to securities
fraud charges in Indiana.Marcus Schrenker could face 10 years in
prison in exchange for pleading guilty to five of 11 counts under a
proposed plea agreement with Hamilton County prosecutors.He could
also be required to pay more than $600,000 in restitution.
Schrenker is accused of bilking friends, family members and other
investors of more than $1 million.A hearing on the deal is set for
Sept. 15 in Hamilton Superior Court in the Indianapolis suburb of
Noblesville. A judge still has to accept Schrenker's plea before
the agreement can take effect.The only remaining dispute is whether
Schrenker should serve his Indiana sentence at the same time as a

Spammer Ralsky pleads guilty to stock fraud
Alan Ralsky, a spam kingpin who was convicted of felony bank fraud
in 1995, could face more than seven years in prison after pleading
guilty in a stock fraud case involving spam messages that pumped up
Chinese quotpennyquot stocks. Ralsky and four other individuals
pleaded guilty on Monday, joining three others who had pleaded
guilty earlier, the US Department of Justice announced on Monday.
Cases are still pending against three other people, they said. The
defendants were indicted in the Eastern District of Michigan in
2007. In 2004 and 2005, the group engaged in a set of related
conspiracies to manipulate stocks using false and misleading spam

Chris Brown Pleads Guilty in Deal
pThe RB singer Chris Brown pleaded guilty in a Los Angeles court on
Monday to one count of felony assault on the pop star Rihanna, The
Associated Press reported. br br br Mark Geragos, a lawyer for Mr.
Brown, said that under the terms of the plea deal, Mr. Brown would
receive five years of supervised probation and six months of
community labor. Mr. Brown would be allowed to complete his
community service in his home state of Virginia but would have to

Accused 1968 Cuba hijacker pleads not guilty in NY
A fugitive who avoided prosecution for more than four decades after
hijacking a 1968 Pan American flight to Cuba pleaded not guilty on
Tuesday to charges including kidnapping and aircraft piracy.Luis
Armando Pena Soltren, 66, appeared in Manhattan federal court on
charges stemming from his involvement in the hijacking of the
flight that left John F. Kennedy International Airport bound for
Puerto Rico on Nov. 24, 1968.Soltren said "not guilty," through a
Spanish translator when asked by a federal magistrate judge how he
pleaded to the 1968 indictment.He will be held in jail pending a
