Deadly Riots Erupt in Western China
From: AOL News
At least 140 people are killed after tensions between ethnic Muslim Uighur people and China's Han majority boil over into riots in the volatile Xinjiang region. The violence may stem from earlier protests over the deaths of two Uighurs who were killed during a fight with Han Chinese co-workers at a factory in southern China.

China court sentences 6 to death in Xinjiang riots
A court in China's far western Xinjiang region has sentenced six men to death for murder and other crimes committed during ethnic riots that killed nearly 200 people. A seventh man was given life imprisonment. The sentences Monday were the first for any of the scores of suspects arrested in the July rioting between Muslim Uighurs and members of the Han Chinese majority in the regional capital of Urumqi. It was China's worst communal violence in decades. The names of the convicted men seemed to identify them as Uighurs. The verdicts appeared aimed at placating Han Chinese who have rallied in Urumqi calling for swift justice. An overseas Uighur activist, however, said they were only likely to exacerbate the ethnic tensions.Xinjiang has been under heavy security since the strife, and state TV s...

China's Middle/Upper Class. A Lot Richer Than The Official Statistics Indicate.
Fascinating post (graph, really) over at China Tells, entitled, "The Mystery of China’s Grey Income." The post discusses a recent academic study finding household income in China is actually double that which is officially reported and for those earning at the top 10% of Chinese society, the real income is 2.2 times that which is officially reported. What this means in business language is that the Chinese consumer usually targeted by Western companies actually has more to spend than you probably thought. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Negotiating With Chinese Companies. In Real Life.
Excellent article by Andrew Hupert (of China Solved fame) in a recent issue of the China Economic Review. The article is entitled, "When Chinese dreams meet the real world: Western negotiators in China need to keep their heads out of the clouds, and it gives five great tips for negotiating with Chinese companies, of which his first two are my two favorites: 1. Plans and dreams are different. I always ask clients and students what...

China Stock Experts. Where Are You?
An editor for a leading U.S. business magazine wrote me seeking my suggestions for good people to write, in English, about China's stock market. My response was to warn about the need to avoid bringing on any of the China investment amateurs who hold themselves out as experts.  I did not name any names for her and I do not plan on doing so here either, but I told her that those who are really in the business (and I know this through a very close relative who is really in the business) do not take these people seriously, nor do I. Respected stock analysts are those who devote their lives to it, putting in 60-80 hours a week and not becoming good until they have been doing it for a decade or more.   The Merrill Lynches and Goldman Sachs of the world have their China stock experts i...

Google, Rio Tinto And The State Of Business In China.
I am trying to see how many posts I can do with Google and Rio Tinto in the title, despite my earlier claims that neither of those matters are terribly relevant to doing business in China. Though the media views those matters as signaling a sea-change in China, I simply view them as part of China's natural progression and well within its normal ebb and flow. Yesterday, I discussed this in the context of an...
